The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai is generally known as CPS. It is an authorised medical organisation in Mumbai, promoting postgraduate specialized medical training to meet the shortage of specialist medical Doctors in India. The roots of the institution dated back to the year 1913. This college was empowered in conformity with Royal College of England, and therefore, established as a similar institution to “Royal College of Surgeons in London.” The main objective of college is to arrange Post Graduate Medical Training, Research & Advances in the Medical Profession through CPS admissions.
CPS Mumbai, is located near to KEM Hospital. Campus is spanning over an area of 80,000 square Feet. College functions in a five storied building, having various departments, Lecture halls, a spacious Examination halls having capacity to accommodate 500 candidates at once.
It was registered in 1913 under the Bombay Society Act of 1860. CPS Mumbai is an autonomous body functioning under various specializations to cater to the needs of Doctor and contribute to the Medical sector in India. It offers Diplomas, fellowship courses and 2 Certificate courses. Currently there are more than 1500+ Doctors are pursuing diploma courses under it. CPS is only the second legalized body after National Board of Educations to provide affiliation to various districts and private medical colleges and hospitals.

About CPS/FCPS

CPS Represents the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai. CPS is a Diploma course for the study of PG Medical courses. Eligibility for Admission:

Applicants looking for a Post Graduate Course Study must have fulfilled eligibility criteria mentioned below:

Candidates willing to join a CPS PG Course must have MBBS or its equivalent qualification recognized by the MCI (Medical Council of India).
A minimum aggregate score of 50% at both Higher & Senior Secondary levels (classes 10th & 12th), and at the level of graduation.
Candidate must hold Permanent Registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council or the State Medical Council where the CPS courses are recognized prior to enrolment.
Additionally all aspirants have to produce Certificate of Eligibility prior to admission and, they must hold permanent registration with the Medical Council of Maharashtra or State Medical Council.

CPS Admission Process:

Admission to all CPS diploma and fellowship courses shall be strictly based on the Post Graduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (PG – NEET). All the seats for diploma and fellowship courses shall be filled by the central admission / counselling process conducted by CPS Mumbai
The detailed information brochure for the admission process will be published by CPS, at the time of admission notice published by cps Mumbai. The brochure will contain information about provisional available seats, fee structure, procedure for online registration, details about timeline, details about the admission procedure etc.

CPS Recognition & Affiliation

All Diplomas/Fellowship and certificate courses are recognized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to impart postgraduate education in India and Government of Malaysia.
CPS is recognized by the medical Council of Maharashtra, Gujrat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, etc. It is also recognized by the Union territory of Dadar and Nagar Haveli.
There are approximately 20 institutions of identical fields affiliated for providing medical training under CPS affiliation in Gujrat. However, 125+ medical Institutions involving private medical Colleges, Govt. Medical Colleges, deemed universities or Corporation Medical Institutions recognized by UGC are affiliated to CPS for providing PG medical specialized training programs.

FCPS Information

Fellowship of college of Physicians & Surgeon (FCPS) is a medical qualification awarded by the College of Physicians & Surgeon Mumbai. Promoting specialty based medical practice
To arrange Post Graduate Medical Training, Research & Advances in the Medical Profession. To consider the various governments, semi-government, certain tertiary care hospitals, other private medical colleges and private hospitals for the training of the students in their respective speciality.

To strengthen the health care system in rural and peripheral areas by making specialists available where MD/MS/DM/MCh are not available.
Duration of both MD/MS & FCPS courses is 3 years, run in both government and private set up with similar quality standard of the host institute, similar academic activities, compulsory thesis work of 1 year duration under a qualified thesis guide with external review process (exposure to research methodology), and academic activities (library and journal facility, presentation in national and international conferences, research article publication, training program, workshop, and CME).
Clinical activity in both the courses is similar with respect to emergency case handling, surgical exposure, clinical case discussion, case exposure, availability of equipment and diagnostic tool, patient load to be handled, duty hour, night duty, leave entitled including maternity leave and other facilities.
Regarding the exit examination, in MD course, theory and practical examination is conducted in host institute. In practical examination, both internal (high chance of bias in evaluation process) and external examiners are present. Furthermore, passing theory examination is not an essential criterion of eligibility to appear in the practical examination. While FCPS exit examination is conducted by Royal College of Physician & Surgeons.
